A GENTLE HOMECOMING

The 3-3-3 Rule
for coming home.

Every rabbit adjusts at a different pace. The 3-3-3 Rule is a gentle guide to what you may notice—and how you can help—during the first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months together.

PATIENCE BUILDS TRUST

Homecoming happens
one hop at a time.

Do not rush affection or compare one rabbit with another. Quiet routines, safe choices, and time will help your new companion feel secure.

3DAYS

Your rabbit is taking in new sounds, smells, people, and routines.

Decompress

What to Expect

  • May hide, freeze, or stay unusually quiet.
  • May seem nervous and avoid being touched.
  • May eat or use the litter box only when the room is quiet.
  • May not show their true personality yet.

How to Help

  • Provide a quiet, limited space with a hide box.
  • Keep unlimited hay, fresh water, and familiar pellets available.
  • Sit calmly on the floor and let your rabbit approach you.
  • Avoid picking up, chasing, visitors, and introductions to other pets.
  • Closely watch eating, drinking, and droppings every day.
3WEEKS

Your rabbit is beginning to understand that this is home.

Learning the Routine

What to Expect

  • Starts exploring more and learning the daily schedule.
  • Personality, curiosity, and favorite resting spots begin to appear.
  • May accept treats or approach familiar family members.
  • May test boundaries by chewing, digging, or having litter-box accidents.

How to Help

  • Keep feeding, cleaning, playtime, and bedtime predictable.
  • Offer safe exercise time and thoroughly bunny-proof the area.
  • Use small treats and calm praise to build trust.
  • Practice short, gentle handling only when needed.
  • Allow your rabbit to approach instead of forcing interaction.

What to Expect

  • Feels more secure and relaxed in the home.

  • May seek attention, follow family members, or rest nearby.
